The organization describes the campus as a place to foster safety, stability, connection and greater independence. The broader project also includes plans for family-centered support and children's services. We'll continue following the work and ways neighbors can help. |

Each week, we shine a light on someone who contributes to life in our community. This week, meet a longtime coach and educator. Mike Brown More Than a Scoreboard ![]() Mike Brown. Photograph: TSSAA. Former Hendersonville basketball coach Mike Brown spent decades working with Sumner County students as a teacher, coach, middle-school principal and athletics administrator. The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association recognized him with a Distinguished Service Award for the 2024–25 school year. Brown coached basketball for about 20 years and track for 13 years, while also teaching physical education and science. His career later included school leadership and work supporting athletics across the county. What makes his story memorable is the relationships. Brown told TSSAA that former players still greet him as “Coach Brown” when they meet around town, and that some connections have continued long after graduation. One former player even invited Brown to attend a major military promotion ceremony. It is a reminder that the influence of a good teacher or coach can last far beyond a season. Veterans Park — A Place for Every Generation ![]() Photo courtesy of the City of Hendersonville. Hendersonville has more than lakefront scenery to enjoy. Veterans Park at 144 Scotch Street brings together places for children to play, families to picnic and neighbors to take a walk. The city's park listing includes Mary’s Magical Place, an inclusive playground, along with walking and biking paths, picnic shelters, sports facilities and restrooms. Whether you have children or simply want a change of scenery, it's a useful local spot to keep in mind. This is what Around Our Town will be about each week: a park, neighborhood, building, local resource or overlooked place that makes Hendersonville worth exploring. We'll aim to tell you something useful, not just give you another name on a map. |
